Shedrack Salami is a Nigerian documentary filmmaker, cinematographer and visual artist passionate about storytelling that inspires change. His filmmaking journey was shaped by a decade of visual exploration. His work is driven by a deep commitment to capturing human resilience, cultural identity, and untold stories across Africa.
He is a 2024 StoryMi Academy Fellow, sponsored by the French Embassy in Nigeria. As part of the fellowship, he directed Beyond Olympic Glory, a short documentary following a young female boxer from the slums of Bariga, Lagos, whose Olympic dreams are crushed by a doping scandal. The film has garnered admiration at International festivals such as the iRep International Documentary Film Festival and won Best Short Documentary at the Hollywood African Cinema Connection Festival in South Africa.
His second short film, Semblance Realism, was nominated for the inaugural SmallRig Awards, received an Honourable Mention at the Panorama International Film Festival, and has screened at several international festivals. His other notable credits include Director/Producer of Telemedicine: Bridging Healthcare Gaps in Nigeria, Camera Operator for the LGBTQ+ documentary series Uncommon Beauty (Seasons 1 & 2) and Calling the Spirits.
Shedrack’s creative journey began as a graphic artist in 2015 while studying Sociology. He then moved into fine art, using body painting to address social issues such as drug abuse, sexual violence, and bad governance. In 2019, his thought-provoking work earned him a Hall of Fame Award as Kogi State’s Most Creative Artist. By 2020, he expanded into photography, documenting everyday stories across Nigeria. In 2021, he fully embraced filmmaking, blending his artistic background with cinematography and post-production to tell powerful, socially relevant stories.
Through his production company (Xtrovarts Visual Studios), he has led and contributed to multinational documentary and commercial projects for global organizations such as McKinsey & Company, Hispasat, Axess Network, Comitas Health, Samsung Mobile, GTBank, Tecno Mobile, Nigerian Breweries, and the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
Shedrack is committed to inspiring a new generation of African creatives. He believes storytelling should challenge societal norms, foster empathy, and inspire action. Through every project, he continues to push the boundaries of filmmaking to amplify voices that deserve to be heard.
